regardless if you arent requiring SOMETHING of the transmission you will not run the fastest time possible.. sure you might run a 9.30 with a street start, but its not your fastest possible then, a street start vs a good hook you should be runnin like 8.5 or 8.7 instead of a 9.3 60' times are extremely important, and when you move X mass over Y distance in T time, there is always E ammount of energy that has to be harnessed causing S total stress on components..
Now S total stress can be divided up because something has to give in order to get the car moving, especially moving quickly.. The engine could give causing a stall, the clutch could give and the car goes nowhere smoking the clutch, the transmission or driveshaft could take a shit and game over, the diff could blow out game over, or the tires could smoke and not hook and you run a slow time.......... Its about splitting this up with the proper ammount of clutch slip, rpm's, throttle, and wheelspin (or lack of) to create a situation where S stress gets divided up most efficiently.......
Something has to give and a FWD style stock MR2 tranny was never designed to move 2400 pounds 60' with 500RWHP with a 60' time of like 1.3-1.5 more than a few times, eventually it WILL DIE... AL has shown us that already 6 axles and 2 trannies...
SO you say that AL's new lighter weight will make his trannies more reliable... I say NO.. The reason is the quest for lower times... Even though the pounds are less, he will compensate for it by going for quicker 60' times and load the tranny with the same ammount of stress if not more.. the 60' time will be a LOT faster cause of lost weight, but the driveline parts will be just as stressed since hes -'s weight and +'s speed..
Either way ya look at it, if you wanna run your best times and play with the "big boys" your gonna break shit eventually.. Gotta pay to play
