I don't think that is very true. Sure they could be made fast as hell but the majority of newer cars are faster stock than their parents and grandparents. I was actually reading about this the other day and a lot of stock muscle cars were running like high 15's to low 17's in the quarter. Don't get me wrong they all had much greater potential but I think stock for stock the newbies are holding it down.
The E.T.'s you mention is because they has hard as rocks bias-ply tires.
Look at the Ford Falcon Thunderbolt for example. Ran mid 14's on shit factory tires and mid 11's on slicks ! :o

Don't see to many cars like this these days. And there are tons of others that fit this category.
I agree the average speed of all cars are greatly improved over the old ones but there will never be any replacement for displacement no matter how many blowers, turbos, etc. you hang off the newer cars.
