The cam timing isnt a good idea for changing distributor timing for fear of contact. Also because it changes more than just spark.
However changing your overall timing by just turning the distributor is a horrible way to do ANYTHING and tuning is the only way to be reliable and safe. When you tuen you must sync the ecu with the crank timing first, then you can be certain that the timing numbers being input into the map will mimic the timing you see at the crank.
