its not so much the bottom end, i think its mostly the valvetrain that i've seen fail. i would at the very least do head bolts for reliability reasons, if your head lifts it could cause major problems
I think there has been plenty of rod failure in cars making 330+. Not sure about the Audi version, but the early Golf/Jetta 1.8t (AWW code) wouldn't take much more than that.
