Right now I have on my website an automotive shoot is $100 + travel charges if not in my zipcode.
And everything else is $45/hr + travel charges. I originally had it at like $75/hr but I felt bad and changed it
He charges $350 for big/important events, not little spur of the moment car shoots for friends.

That is his profession and he obviously has a good reputation in Vegas since he gets to shoot all these big events. If he can charge $350 an hour and have steady customers, more power to him.

I'm sorry but a random joe that goes out and buys an XSI or any other base model DSLR is not a professional. It's merely a hobby. If people want pictures of their car, use it as an opportunity to better yourself and improve your photography.
