forget the LS1. You have to pretty much gut the truck and redesign everything.
a 5.7L vortec (350) will swap in using the same mounts, and the tranny will bolt up. Just need the wiring harness from the 350 for the extra 2 cylinders.

I havent read too much on the lsx swaps in dimes, what exactly has to be redesigned? Not trying to be a smart ass but from what I can tell it should be just like any other v8 swap, specific mounts, headers.
I have read the oil pan can be in issue with the LS's, but a good torch or plasma can fix that.
The major PITA i can see out of it would be the 10 miles or so of wire harness, but that could almost all be avoided with a carb setup and a front drive dizzy, provided of course the funds are there to do so.
And If the major thing is all the wiring, and you're on a budget why not go with a 1st gen sbc?, with the influx of all the LS parts out now the "dinosaur motor" is only going to get cheaper to build
