Well, if this is any factor-we have sold maybe two full plexi enclosures in the last year? About 4 years ago if I remember right, we did alot more plexi with lighting and what-not. Then it went to fiberglass for a couple of years, now it is all about being hidden, out of the way, and looking factory. Alot more of it involves factory integration with the factory head units also (due to the pretty-good navigation, satellite, and iPod stuff available from the OEM manufacturers).
I don't even think I have enough plexi in the shop to build a full enclosure-that is how long it's been. We used the last couple of large pieces earlier this year to put behind the shop glass for security measures. The last setup we even used some plexi on was a 2003 M5 series BMW that required a blow thru box into the rear deck (BMW's trunks are completely sealed off from the interior of the vehicle by sheet metal-blow thru's are the only quality way to get the bass into the vehicle). The guy spent so much on the MMATS Mojo's that he wanted them to be seen when the trunk was opened so we made the part of the enclosure that faces back of the trunk out of plexi with his company logo beadblasted into it with LED backlighting. Very simple design from a labor stand point but very flashy-he is a "flashy" client...
I think it all comes down to personal preference not trends. But, the current trend really isn't plexi. Do what is within your budget and makes you happy. That's what it is all about...
