Default Crank Angle sensor OBDII B18C1

In order for a OBDII USDM motor to run in a OBDI using a OBDI ecu, do you have to use a OBDI distributor for it to run correctly. Reason being is that I was told that because of the location of the crank angle sensor on the OBDII B18C1 I'd have to swap out distributors for a OBDI GSR Distributor in order to read timing. Only reason I asked is because it appears to come from a good source, but when I've searched online through forums, faq's and so forth, I havent come across it in any of the articles that I would have to use a different distributor and in fact that if I had a USDM OBDII motor that it is totally compatible with the ignition componets. Being that said...and I ask because I dont know...is the crank angle sensor considered one of those componets, and if not, is that the point that I am totally missing.
