I've done research on this for my own bodywork project. Most experts these days are using the bonding and NOT welding. Repeated tests have shown that the bond is stronger than the surrounding metal. There are videos of people pulling bonded sheetmetal apart and ripping the metal before the glue gives way.
It is by no means a "shortcut", its preferred over welding, especially for external sheetmetal, because you don't introduce heat into the metal causing warping.
+1 on the adhesive route... the one that Eastwood carries is some good stuff. There is another brand who's name escapes me at the moment (Fuse something or another) that is really good as well.
