Where do you think the RCAs are grounded to? The entire essence of shielded RCAs is a common ground.
Take a look at any diagram of a preamp output source. The one thing you will always find is the common immediately drawn to ground. That means that the only time running a bare copper wire from ground to the shields would solve a noise problem would be on a defective headunit or a headunit with a poor chassis to ground connection.
