Leaving a firearm locked at home is NOT irresponsible as a home is much larger and a would be thief has a much harder time finding the weapon. Further, that's why responsible gun owners have gun SAFES, not just a trigger lock. The trigger lock is for when the owner is HOME, while the SAFE is for when the owner is away form the home.
So...only 15% of guns on the street are stolen. So, basicly, 15 out of every 100 crimes involving a firearm are with a stolen firearm. Is that to say that if those guns had not been stolen, then those crimes would not have happened? No....Not even close. Criminals will find a way to commit crimes. Plain and simple. But your deadbolt on your house is basicly useless too, so do you leave your house unlocked all the time? Doubtful. Basicly, not allowing gun owners to keep guns in their unattended vehicles keeps the honest people from taking them. It also keeps the DISHONEST peopl from taking them out of their car....Or worse yet, commiting a worse crime than just stealing your car. If the weapon is in the car, and they happen on it in the course of stealing the car, the criminal gets a new high....They feel invincible and are actually more prone to commit armed crimes.
MOST people do not spend 1/4 of their lives in their car. MOST people do not spend 1/8 of their lives in their car. Why, then would we want to allow them to keep their personal protection device in a place where they spend so little time?
