Also make sure to get it installed properly. Simply throwing them in your current housing will make the light scatter in a very ugly pattern, and you'll be shining pink in every other car's eyes. Retrofit it properly with good lenses (EXTREMELY important to focus light properly and actually make the HIDs very useful), a good cutoff (usually the lenses provide this in some way), and get a decent color temperature. if you really want to make yourself look like a weirdo, then you should only go about as high as 8,000k. This is more of a deep purplish hue without being too much crappier than a Halogen bulb.
Setting up HIDs in highbeams are relatively useless. If you're planning on flashing them at people, that will severely reduce the lifespan of the bulb, on top of the fact that the HIDs need time to warm up properly for the first time they're turned on in a 30 minute or more off-period.
I could go on and on, but the general answer is don't do it, get a nice, decent color temp HID kit to retrofit them into your low beam housing with a good lens that incorporates a good cutoff.
