Once the information, research, price and availability of the Ecotec neared what they had for the K20, the Ecotec proved to be a superior motor so they stuck with it. They just happened to make the transition around the same time as they started selling them stateside. The Honda motor is still available as an expensive option for diehard VTEC'ers. The advantage is no surprise really, given that the Ecotec was designed with a S/C on there already.
