thats how i do it also. i have done it both ways though. so it can be done and some people prefer doing it from the bottom. when i swap engines at my shop, i just unbolt everything and then lift the car and leave the engine sitting there. but without a car lift, i prefer dropping it in from the top. just seems easier to me.
i just use 2 huge jacks and a spare tire...it gets plenty lift lol enough to get a rolling dolly underneath and pull the motor out...
