that sounds like it would be a problem with the actual gauge itself. maybe a loose connection somwhere behind the dash, that would connect after you hit it.
98gsturbo, try hitting the top of your dash. its a good place to start, but that clip i mentioned earlier is very easy to get to and check, its not like a big job or anything. i hope it works out for you and turns out to be some dumb little thing.
