Wonder why?
Beginning U.S. driver's education classes teach high schoolers/teenagers to drive auto 'cuz it's easy to teach. They also teach right foot usage for both gas and brake, so the student can't wreck the driver's ed car as easily......................automatically creating slower reaction times in an emergency. They teach you that you are incompetent to drive any other way, and that you will die a bloody death on the road, before you get a piece of pussy!
The test establishes "minimum competency", meaning that a 16 year old is just as "good" as someone 116 years old. In Florida, if you don't crash or get a ticket for 3 years you get a "safe driver renewal",
meaning you can renew by mail! I have one!
They also teach in enclosed parking lots, at idle speed, so the car won't get wrecked. The cars have dual brake controls, cable activated, and are pretty poor as far as emergency stops by the instructor.
----------------
If we had quality instruction, we would have fewer crashes, nation wide, and lower insurance rates....................which is not what the insurance lobbyists want. If you give inadequate training to someone in the beginning, they probably will be bad driver's their whole life.
But in America, you drive a car and Dale Earnhart drives a (race) car, therefore you think you are as good as Dale Earnhart................and you learn from watching television sitcoms, that you are supposed to always blame someone else for what happens to you.
-----------------
The standard driver's ed classes are 40 hours classroom and 6 hours in the car. It should be 6 hours classroom and 40 hours in the car ............then
they are tested in an enclosed parking lot (Florida) and turned loose on the roads to learn how to drive by observing other bad drivers who learned to drive the same way.
God blessed me with learning another way, and driving another way.
Driving is like sex. Everybody does it, and everybody thinks they are good at it, but some are a LOT better than others! Females are free to challenge me on this.

Ok I have to admit most of the roads in the states are straight (especially in Florida

), so it's a comfort thing I guess, but you all know how hard it is when it comes to drive stick and you've been driving automatics for years before........................................
