I have a friend and he does have a RX8 with those paddle shifters, It sucks, a lot, but that's on the RX8!! This shifter is a lot faster, just like the VW's and Ferraris I'm pretty sure!! And one of the reasons why the mazda sucks it's cuz the auto version with the shifter behind the wheel is 40hp short compared to the stick!!
Well if you say its much better than the RX-8 then I will reserve judgement. Like someone else said, it would be too boring anyways for my taste. (I don't know how I could change from the perfection that is the s2k shifter)
