I'm not sure what can be used to protect the car,.....But to get the bugs off easy, I can suggest Bounce Dryer Sheets.
They won't scratch the paint, They smell really good, and they are just abrasive enough to get the acidic bugs off of your paint without killing your shoulder.
Just wet them up and Begin the removal......
