Cleaning with wd-40 and removing it afterwords is fine. Using it as a lube will destroy your o-rings and bearings. The reason it cleans greasy things so well is because it breaks down petroleum which is not only on your chain, but also in your seals and bearings.
i call bs on the whole WD-40 thing....i have discussed this at length on other forums and have found MANY riders with the same experience...I use only WD-40 for cleaning and lubricating....ive used it on every type of chain (x,e,exo,seal and unsealed) in dirt riding/racing and street riding....NEVER HAD A CHAIN PROBLEM....EVER......i have 14K miles on my ZX-10's stock chain (EK 525) and have used WD-40 only for lubing....rings are fine, chain wear is normal (actually slightly above average)...
man that shit is good fur almost anything....
