Not to be an ass, but your theory isn't sound. The Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla have been the cheapest cars from these two manufacturers up until 2-years ago (now their cheapest cars are the Fit and Yaris...both have shown to be fantastic cars in their first year of manufacturing). Both vehicles are rated some of the most reliable and best built economy cars on the road since they were first built back in the late 70's and early 80's. Same can't be said for the older Cavaliers, Neons, Escorts, etc.
Now I would agree with you if you said "buy the cheapest AMERICAN car they make, chances are you will have problems."

American manufacturers just can't build a decent entry level vehicle. Hell, most would argue that they can't build a decent vehicle regardless of trim level. Look at the Ford GT. Ford's HAND BUILT pride and joy had a rear suspension recall where it may collapse when being driven. If Ford can't get their 6-figure, limited production, hand built "super car" right, what makes you think they can do anything else right. [/rant]
