Your VSS is in the back of your odometer cluster. And gets is readings from your speeometer cable. If your sppedometer all of a sudden stopped working then usually your cable snapped which means your VSS is not recieving a signal which means you're getting a code 17. Also check and make sure your speedo cable is still secure inside the tranny and to the back of the odometer.
