nah man your reading way to much into it... its just that the bigger the group the more people tend to crash. which pretty much screws the ride up for everyone, not just the down rider.
the small group thing is nicer to keep track of when waiting at the stop signs for the last guy. as long you don't ride off the road or into anyone in front of you then everyone is pretty much welcome. of course you also have to enjoy riding corners, I've been on ride where some of the new guys are like wow this is nice out here but damn there are soooo many turns. which is the point but some new riders don't know that. riding wheelies around town and meets and eats are all some newer people know about bikes.
if everyone leaves there ego's and the stunting at home then a bigger group can work out just fine... its the guys that get in front of the faster guys because they were chill on the stright is where it all starts to go wrong. if someone corners faster than you then let them pass... the ride will be better for both.
oh and if your the last person make sure you let the stopped group know that your the last one by wavying the go ahead as you come up on them. don't have like 3 slower riders behind you and wave because everyone is looking at you....that's how people get lost.
