you may want to try learning a little with a friends car first. because:
a) they can help you out and tell you what you are doing wrong
b) you will be more careful and wont try to kill it (that me just be me)
c) it is likely that there car is not all wheel drive which means there is more give in the powertrain (fwd and rwd will spin tires before breaking the trans)

i learned a little on my brothers prelude and so since it was not my car i went easy on it and also he yelled at me everytime i screwed up. im not saying that im now a master at the stick but i can get it going and it gives u the idea of how to drive stick.

ill i can say is slaming the gears and burning the clutch gets you doublelly yelled at.
