I would take the corolla over the nissan if what I wanted was a nice daily driver that got good gas milage and was known to be very reliable.
I bought my wife a Matrix XR a few years ago for that same reason.
The car is roomy for its size.
Gets great gas milage(30-32mpg)
And I have never had to spend a dime on it.
