I always thought two 4ohms (like a dual voice coil) wired together would give you 2ohms (therefore each output on my box would be 2ohms, which would mate to my 2ohm amp), but maybe I'm wrong?

you have dual 4ohm subs
INSIDE the box they are wired in series to 8ohm on each
to the AMP we got 5ohms because of native resistance. for all practical purposes you have a 4ohm setup, my meter is really sensitive and it showed up at 4.6ohms which rounds to 5ohms.
You need to open the box up and change the inside wiring to 2ohms on either side(wire them parallel) as of now they are wired in series to 8ohm.
