yes, cork doesnt like heat at all...

i used several strategically placed dabs of Gray RTV to hold the gasket in place while i positioned the parts. there is one part that had the surface gouged a few times, so i put a skim coat of silicone on it to fill in the imperfections and then applied the gasket.

wire brush/wheel on a drill works wonders for removing gaskets and silicone.
