Was that on one of the old funky v4 models? It sounds like they were just imitating the layout of most longitudinal rwd cars, but in reverse. Probably some funky against-the-grain thing Saab did instead of just going with the transverse mounting. Saab was well known for their unconventional (funky) design before they were bought out.
