Pretty much summed it up right there. To make the same power, it is going to take more boost with the LS. So why not boost the vtec setup more. In the end, the LS loses. It is the R/S that makes the LS have more trq. Sure the combustion chamber size of the vtec heads vs. the LS head will probably play a role in the cylinder pressures, but by how much? Not what you are thinking I can tell you that.

No bandwagoneer here, just common sense. If you are spending the money to make the most power, it is defintaley worth it to spend a few hundred to go the vtec route, and then send that head off to get reworked if you feel the need to.
