Question Why do starters go bad?

A question for you mechanics or techies.
I'm planning on replacing the starter for the second time, within a year, on my 95 GTP and I was just wondering what can cause a starter to go bad?
Can the battery have an effect on it? In other words, if the recommended CCA is 690 and a replacement battery has a higher CCA (i.e. 770 - 1000) will that have any affect on the life of the starter? Or what about the group size, could that be an issue too? I found that the car can take a 75-2 or 78 would that make any difference?
Anyway, if anybody knows, I'd apprieciate your input.
