I believe you can. If you have a digital 8 camera. Digital 8 cameras can play back Hi8 and regular 8mm video tapes. The camera should be able to convert the signal digitaly internally. Ive heard of people using their DV cams as a go-between for analog sources even. Feeding analog (VHS for ex.) into the inputs on the camera and hooking up the firewire (or whatever Sony calls it...I-link I think) outbound to the computer. Shouldnt really matter too much if the signal was originally recorded analog.
