what the hell is up with the figure skater/hockey player analogy? It seems like everybody uses it, but it's completely wrong.....not necessarily for the figure skating part, but the hockey part. Hockey is a team sport where the object is to face off to your oponent directly and overcome their defenses to score goals whilst protecting your own goal. Where does that even remotely compare to a sport that is not a team sport, the competetors do not directly face off against each other (with the pro-solo type of events excluded of course), and the winner is determined by the quickest time, not by the one who manages to break down their opponents defense while keeping their defense intact....that'd be like if you had two courses and 5 cars on each team where the point is to knock down the other guy's cones (by drifting into them perhaps?) and ramming into the other cars to keep them from knocking yours down.
I think people try to make this analogy work because they want to make drifting out as something "gay" and real racing as something "manly"....and then everybody just kind of goes along with it because they don't really care. Why not make the comparison to a rodeo, where autox is the barrel race event, and drifting is like bronco riding with points for style added in. Just because the "sport" is scored on style and the participants wear leotards does not mean drifting is really similar to figure skating and an appropriate ice event analogue exists for road racing and autocrossing as a contrast. Come up with something better, the whole hockey/ice skating thing just doesn't work anymore.
Other analogies are: boxing/pro-wresting, xxxxxxxx/surfing&skating, motox/moto freestyle seems to work pretty well, something serious and technical/something for shits and giggles?
