Speaking as someone who does drive around the country, I have to disagree. NO cell company has what I would call good coverage across the country on their own network. They all have holes, that is why they partner with other companies and roaming came about. Now most companies have the bargaining power to offer their customers a plan that they call no roaming, which just means you don't get charged for it, you still are technically roaming.

Most of my truck driving friends use sprint, pretty good network of towers and unlimited pcs to pcs, you can't beat it, especially when most of the people you talk to on the phone have it as well. I will be getting a sprint phone in a couple months to go along with my new sidekick2.
