Default need advice from engine guru's (kinda long)

I have a problem that is concerning me and I want your opinions on it. I just had my engine rebuilt and I got it back last tuesday, wednesday night/thursday morning the lifters started tapping and the CEL came on. I took the car back to the place where I got the rebuild done and they told me it was the EGR valve causing the CEL to come on and the Lifters they would take care of. Now I only drove the car exactly 97 miles since I've had it. I just got a call this morning and they said the cylinder furthest away from the EGR valve bubbled up and cracked. They are fixing it at no charge to me except for the EGR valve that needs to be replaced. They are also saying that because of the EGR valve malfunctioning, that's what caused the top of that cylinder to heat up and crack. Now my concern is, I have JE forged pistons that were installed with this rebuild. I have a strong feeling that there is no way that after 97 miles it could have cracked like that. The problem is I am not completely sure. Could this really be a possibility with the EGR or are they just trying to cover their ass cause they know they fucked up??? Any input would greatly be appreciated. TIA
