The gen3 is not even the same engine. The differences go way beyond just the turbo and injectors. I could go on and on for hours and I even wrote an article about the differences for clubmr2 magazine. Here is the rundown:
FYI: Gen III Differences
- MAP sensor instead of AFM
- Bosch D-Jetronic (Gen III) vs. L-Jetronic (relatively primitive) engine management
- Different ECU
- slightly more aggressive cams
-- Revised intake manifold (8 'independent long ports' reduced to 4)
- lower compression ratio
- stainless steel head gasket
- TVIS eliminated
- EGR eliminated
- throttle body increased from 55mm to 60mm
- inlet valve lift increased from 8.2 to 8.7
- Less restrictive exhaust elbow
There are the little differences that edge up to make 15%-30% power differences with the same mods (unopened engines)
