If you're really having problems with first being too short, the solution is called "Galant VR4 first gear". If that's still too short, they have taller gears, but you don't want 1st to be taller than second. I personally have never heard many people complaining about the AWD's gearing, in fact, most people recommend sticking with the shorter gear unless you're an autocrosser and have a lot of undersize courses to run on.

As far as the tranny problems go, yeah, dsm trannies suck. Fortunately we have a very good tranny builder right here in Tampa and his prices are very reasonable. Or you can buy a 3k tranny from TRE or Shep and gain the ability to powershift at 9500+ and lose some of the fear of slipping the clutch out too fast on the launch and breaking something. I think I'll be sticking with Jerry's services, though I'm actually going to attempt it myself first just to see if I can actually get it back together in working condition.
