While it may be cheaper to run a carb than EFI, unless you are datalogging your results, you won't get very far with either setup. Now, considering most EFI systems (any that cost more than $1k) include datalogging, and no carb comes with a datalogger, you must factor that in as well.
I just find it much easier and more enjoyable to plug my laptop into my car, look at the engine real time, record all parameters under all conditions, and review them from the comfort of my bed at night, than to pull the carb off a few times to make small changes with no real indication I'm even moving in the right direction.
