Getting my 68 stang back together build thread
I needed some motivation as I hadn't driven it since I broke the transmission on my way to school to present it as my senior project titled "The benefits of adding a turbocharger to an internal combustion engine". I got a C...lol
I bought the car just before I turned 13 after mowing yards that whole summer... heres me:

I replaced both quarters, the floor pans, fenders, hood, trunk bumpers, all new interior, alot of new chrome, and painted it in my garage.... "finished" it up a week or so after I turned 16. I washed it twice a week, no matter how cold, and if I didn't have time or something I would wake up extra early before school and wash it. Here was round one:

Round one didn't last long, I wrecked the car like 6 months later and it went downhill from there... 2 other people hit me after that so I decided the car would no longer be a DD. Ignorant ass holes who slam their new durangos door into the side of my freshly RE-painted car should be shot. Twice. Especially after they look around and get in quickly and try to drive off. Then shot again after offering me $20 to have it fixed. Someone backed down the quarter panel a week later.
Between all of this I decided to try to make the car faster. I started off with a chrome air cleaner! Then modded the log style intake off a later model to bolt on a holley 2 bbl carb. Threw on a header, cam, dual roller timing chain, stiffer valve springs, arp head studs and went from a 22 second quarter mile, down into the 17's!!!!! yea... lol
Found out you needed boost and lots of it to go fast. first turbo setup was an IHI turbo off a ford probe, way too small but spooled fast. 7psi and spinning down the track with my one wheel wonder put my down to 15 seconds flat.

Took it out to sunshine and heres the 2 runs I made, still was my DD and I wanted to make sure I could drive it home.
gah.. I need a new rear.. and wider ties... and an - Car Videos on StreetFire
Finally dropped an 8" in and did 2 wheel peels, heres my favorite video of the car... definitely on a closed coarse. I have grown up ALOT since then....

With such a small turbo it would run out of steam around 5k rpms, so I went bigger, too big, more like salt flats big on the exhaust side... so instead of running out of steam it wouldn't start making steam until 5k rpms lol... looked impressive though. mmmmmm intercooler

Had fuel problems with my regulator and a modded SBC fuel pump, so I now have an efi pump, and a new regulator. this setup lasted 3 days before the tranny went.

Ended up with a sour deal on having my tranny and converter being built so I ended up dropping a 4.6 mod motor in the car... welded up the mounts and had everything bolted in but no wiring done as well as the return side of the fuel system.
Here was the 4.6 in without the tranny mount holding the back end up.

THEN a few months later John and Wendy happened to post up a FREE 6 cylinder with tranny and a bunch of new parts... SO out with the 4.6 and back into the I6! Much easier to work on and I am completely against doing something normal, There will never be a sbf motor in the car as long as I own it. Nothing against the people that do and I am sure yours will be faster but I like the challenge of doing something different and challenging.
After getting the motor I started with the crappy log head. I started off by doing a pretty modest port job on one of my extra heads. I cut off the log and welded up a plenum to weld to the head. Heres where I am now, just finished it up this morning.

still need to cut the hole for the carb and figure out how I want to mount the carb to it. I guess I am going to need a carb too....
I made a CAD file for an exhaust flange so I can weld up a tubular manifold. still not sure what turbo(s) I will run. I have an IHI, but need another one for twins, or may run a different unit.

very different and cool project !!!!!
would've been cool with the 4.6 too, kinda like the i6 route though..

definitely a cool project, sucks it got hit... twice! I think you should have kept the 4.6 in and turbo-ed it, but either way still interesting and different. good luck

Cut out the hole and drilled and tapped the intake for the mounting studs. Picked up a spacer at work to make some room for the linkage and the valve cover. This is a carb I had laying around not the one I will be using but looks like everything fits good. Definitely fills out the manifold better than I thought it would. Almost makes it look like it could be fast one day.
Again sorry for the crappy pics.

Finally got around to doing a little more work. One of my friends came over when I was getting ready to roll the welder out and start filling all the holes and junk, and talked me out of it because he knew I would get way too into it and never finish it and it would be a few MORE months until I got the motor in. So we did some sanding, shot it with some semi gloss paint, and threw the motor in. I pulled the timing cover off and found a TON of slack, almost enough where I could make it jump teeth It ground a pretty good amount out of the timing cover. I had a spare so I threw some paint on it, and picked up a new water pump and timing chain from work. Didn't know what color to paint the accessories so I decided a little bit of of every color would be different. I like it.

I just threw the carb hat on with the filter for fun. thats it for now, its warming up so I can do work again... lol I HATE cold weather
