synthetic vs. non synthetic
I know it's been asked but I never paid much attention till now.
I have an 88 crx si with b16 swap and will be running a t3/t4 turbo.
from what I hear synthetic will prolong the life of the turbo cartridge due to the required temp for coking being higher than non- syn.
what are your opinions?

this is an everlasting debate that both sides will have valid points on...
IMO, i say use regular oil and change it every 1500miles. i use mobile 10w-40 and change it every 1500 and the oil still looks close to new when i drain it

A lot of fast Mustang guys I have talked to with turbos say synthetic is not good with turbos. It develops a build up / film in some parts of the turbo.
The few times I tried synthetic (without a turbo) it would leak from every possible place due to how thin it is. I put the dino oil back in and no leaks. Also your breather cap / exhaust will smoke more with synthetic.

i use just plain ol castrol GTX 10w30 and change it 2 or 3 times every 3000 miles.... just changed it today as a matter of fact and the filter and oil that was in it from last change still looked good....
better safe than sorry i guess...
By the way, why waste money on synthetic just to change it so often... If I keep changing it as often as i do there is no point... id rather keep buying the 12 qt cases of castrol from walmart for 13 dollars and get 3 changes out of it, than pay 20 every time i change it....

No question about it synthetic oil is far slippier than regular oil. I have seen numerous engines run cooler with a switch to sythetic. This is from a reduction in friction.
Two drawbacks to sythetic. The molecules are smaller than regular oil so it will find leaks that regular oil does not.
Oil temps remain hotter with sythetic. Sythetic oil does not transfer heat as well as regular oil. Just like cast iron holds heat longer than aluminum.
No matter what kind of oil you use it has to be changed at short intervals. The darkness you see in your oil is the carbon deposits that get past the rings. Hint. Carbon makes good sandpaper.
I like to use half and half. But mix it yourself. The premixed stuff in bottles is likely very low in synthetic content.

i like vapor use mobile1 15w-50, simply cause it works so much better in my car. some people say 50w, wont go thru honda bearings......bullshit, they only recommend whats typed on the oil cap for regular daily driving and durability. but we drive our hondas different than most regular people. so for the extra few dollars, i want the assurance that if most of my oil fell out, i would still okay for a tiny bit longer......................my .02 cent
