race gas VS pump gas??? tech
okay heres the question......
i was told that if you put race gas in your tank that it wont mix with regular gas because it is lighter than.....but i have put it in my car before and have notice the difference in the 2 gasses. so what is the truth with race gas...
also when does it become too much octane?? 104,110,116???
what is good to run on a turbo honda to run 15 psi on a decently built motor?

race gas is pretty much meant to get rid of detonation/pre-ignition.
the flashpoint gets higher as the octane rating raises.

i noticed better throttle response and quicker acceleration, but with my supercharged crx, the guy at the dyno told me that sometimes you can have too much octane and net less HP because your motor cant ignite the mixture, if it is too high?????

that chart is great but it doesnt tell you at the top of the table what gas you are mixing in to get the figure, i dont understand, maybe im a tard, but can someone explain,

Well you make less HP from higher octane thus, the lower the octane, the more power you make. Octanes are only used to prevent detonation, so you want the lowest octane possible without detonating.
basically your car needs to be tuned to run race gas efficiently. just dumping it into a car tuned for pump gas in most cases will cause it to lose power. when race gas is added, it allows the igntion timing to be a little more agressive thus making more power. also leaning out the a/f ratio a bit will also help make more power

Like Kenny said above, the higher the octane rating the more stable the burn. That's why high compression or high boost engines will use race gas to lower the chances of preignition and detonation.
If you want to see the affects of the octane rating and the different ways they burn you can try this. Two test tubes, one with 87 octane and one with 93. Light them both and watch the results. When done right you will be able to watch a nice steady, controlled burn from the 93. The 87 will be violent and usually blow up the test tube. That will also help explain what Ryde or Die said about the possibility of making less power from race gas if you don't need it.
