Fernando Alonso’s return to Formula 1 at Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix was ended prematurely by a sandwich wrap.

Alpine told Alonso that he had lost the rear brakes and would need to retire for safety reasons in the second half of the race, after what had been an encouraging opening stint. After analyzing the car once it was back in the garage, Alpine executive director Marcin Budkowski said an unfortunate piece of debris was to blame.

“It’s not the best start to the season for us as we had our fair share of bad luck throughout the weekend; both in qualifying and the race,” Budkowski said. “Both cars made a good start and gained some places on the first lap with Fernando holding firm in the top 10.

“After his first stop we had a small issue that forced us to reduce the performance of the car, then after the second stop, a sandwich wrap paper got stuck inside the rear brake duct of Fernando’s car, which led to high temperatures and caused some damage to the brake system, so we retired him for safety reasons. It was a very unlucky first race for Fernando considering how strong he looked.”

Alonso isn’t the first driver to hit such a problem in the opening race of the season: Sergey Sirotkin’s debut for Williams in Melbourne three years ago ended early for similar reasons.

While frustrated by the retirement, Alonso said there were plenty of positives to take from his first race in F1 in over two years.

“It was a shame that we could not see the checkered flag because I really enjoyed the whole thing,” Alonso said. “It was nice to be back racing. It was nice to feel again the adrenaline at the starting grid, the national anthem, all these procedures were very emotional today for me.

“The race itself was fun at the beginning with the start, couple of good battles on the track in the first stint and then unfortunately we had to retire the car with a brake issue… apparently there is some debris on the rear brake duct. Nothing we can do now. More just thinking to Imola and hopefully get some points there.”

Keystone Motor Club was founded in 2012 and had 7 members show up about 2 years ago and KMC had no money.. We now have over 40+ people showing up EVERY 3rd Saturday. We have a meet and greet, a cruise in, a NO ENTRY FEE CAR SHOW, and we give out awards (choice of Best of Show trophy or a $25 gift certificate) and to equalize a daily driver with a $100,000 full show car, we draw for trophys..

THEN we draw for DOOR PRIZES...with a guaranteed $25 minimum 50/50...which paid $50 to $60 the first two months of 2021, and included a $150 collectible and another collectible worth $129, which were both won with a single $1 ticket. We give away a ton of door prizes. Our Keystone newsletter has 20,000+ views. Every month there is a special program from the WOK/Women of Keystone, and we flag you in over the finish line! Yes....we really do have a finish line..... lol And we do everything starting at 930AM and we are gone to the next car show or lunch by noon.

Last time I was asked what happened...... my answer was:

People change. The car scene changes.
17 year olds grow up, get legit jobs, chick gets pregnant, have some kids, buy a house.......
sell the Honda...... lol

The guys who brought me Hondas to fix got respected by me back then,
and now they bring me Mercedes, BMW, SRT's

This year at Simply Clean there were 2500 cars packed into 1,000 legit spaces
.....and a few on the grass.... lol


The guys who drove Hondas years ago got real jobs, a family, a house and now drive expensive and highly modded cars. But after Simply Clean when the cop cars and helicopter showed up at Donny's where a gazillion people were watching the burnouts, it looked about the same as when we watched burnouts back in downtown Orlando years ago
....just before the cops kicked us out. 10,000 of us....... lol

Philosophically,
1.The kids driving Today's Hondas are us.....parents didn't like our haircuts, our music, our cars, our attitude, etc.....
2.Everyone says the car scene is not like it used to be.
3.You can't go back there anymore......because there isn't there any more.

But.....
Go to Belaire Plaza for the Daytona Turkey Rod Run where the retirees are doing burnouts...in the car they always wanted back in high school.......that's us too.
But not everyone knows that........ yet... (wink)

 

What happened? Tampa Racing changed with the car scene.
June 27 2014 was the first announcement in OFFICIAL EVENTS of a single track day at the FIRM.
On January 8 2018 EVERY WEEKEND there was an open track day for cars AND an open trail day for off road Jeeps at the FIRM.

Bring a ride along buddy or arrive as a spectator and it's only $10.
Invite a buddy to drive, and both he and yourself can save some money.

Jordan Taylor has raced Corvettes maybe 10 years and says:

'I don't take it for granted' - Taylor on 10 years with Corvette Racing. Last time I ran the wheels off of it...blew all the tires, beat the fenders all to heck, and ground 5 pounds of metal off the frame rails. It was a great victory. Look it up on the internet.
