Rain X is your friend. Did my windshield, and I only need to use my wipers to keep the mist that gets kicked up off my windsheild. 80mph in pouring rain (bad idea for other reasons...) and the water just gets pushed off the top of the windshield.

 

I discovered by accident that Armorall keeps the windshield clear in a similar manner. I do the windshield, then Armorall the wipers, run it, wipe the haze, and it doesn't need it for a while.

Raindrops start going over the windshield at 30 on up.
80 in the rain requires that I need to acquire a spare car first...

In the wet, most people don't slow until they crash...or until the guy next to them crashes. I'm a coward in the rain.....
