Best thing to do is hold them in your hand. Get a feel for the camera. If you're anything like the rest of us, you'll have 1000 clicks on it before tonight so you want to make sure that you feel comfortable with it.

For that kind of money you can get a killer entry level SLR, D40, D60 or above from Nikon (the Nikon guys will have to give you more info on those - I shoot Canon) or Canon xsi, 40D or 50D. The 40 and 50D are going to eat up all your money. With the xsi you'll get the body and a kit lens and still have $600-700 left over to spend on something else. You don't need much more than that if you're entry level.

This will give you extra money to buy an extra lens (go through B&H or Adorama online to get those, cheaper then Best Buy).

Um if you are asking, and it seems you just have the money to buy good stuff, do your own research, learn about these cameras, and probably start with a less advanced body, and pick up another lens or two, and a flash, to start with...

Dropping that much money shouldn't just be based on what a few people on a forum think because, while we can give you alot of info on what we like personally, it is up to you to find what is right for you. There's tons of places that have camera reviews in both text form and video form and just plain picking up the camera and trying yourself. Websites such as listed above are much cheaper than best buy and just as good if not better (sometimes you can get bundled deals)

The only couple of pieces of advice i CAN give you is, Canon and Nikon are the 2 best known and used camera brands, megapixels aren't everything and (and i can't stress this enough) just because you have expensive gear doesn't mean your shots are going to come out looking pro unless you learn the ropes and know what your doing and how to use that expensive gear. Good luck and happy hunting.
