second try first try..
this is half true. only if you compose the rest of the shot properly can/will that work...negative space can negatively effect the shot if not done correctly
i see what your saying. but at the same time i like the low shots with the car centered. i have a lower and closer shot of the second one that i really like a lot but the picture came out bad. also i thought that this spot was pretty symetric and was trying to show that.
thank you for the input.

Try shooting at a longer focal length, and start with more of a 3/4 shot of the car like this, or this. (Pay no attention to the boring framing on the first one, just the angle of the car.) Once you get a decent 3/4 shot you can move on to trying other angles.
Also, this is just personal preference, but try to stay away from shots that have to be cropped to anything that's not a 3:2 or 4:3 ratio. If you have to crop it excessively wide then you're not framing the shot properly IMO.

I agree with what you are saying. I try and stick to the rule of thirds. Otherwise, if I do center up my subject I try to leave some background/foreground surrounding it.
For instance:

if that picture was cropped to where the top and bottom is right on the roof/bumper line it would look very boring. Mind you, the background sucks for shooting cars anyway, but when you are at a car show, you have no choice on moving backgrounds. Just able to dodge around people.
