Default Good beginner camera?

I've kind of been lurking in this forum for a little bit and it's got me interested in getting a decent camera. I'm not going to try to do any professional photography or anything but I want a camera that can get me decent quality shots and leave some room for editing later on. I was thinking about getting a used D40 or something like that but I was wondering if anyone knows if something like a cybershot would be worth it just to get started with. It would probably be more point and shoot stuff for me but if I like it then I want to be able to upgrade and add to my collection in the future.

Any input would be great, thanks.

Canon Rebel XS. Perfect beginner camera. Whether you wanna get serious or not, it's really great. I started photography a while ago. Knowing one of my teachers was a legit professional, I asked for a recommendation before I went out and bought a camera, and this is what he gave me. Auto/manual focus, control over exposure settings. It's all there. You can go automatic exposure or you can mess around with it all to see what you can do.

Guess you need to start somewhere, so what's your budget first?

We can all sit here and recommend an XS, XSI, D40 etc but if you only want to spend $200, well that blows that lol

That's what I was getting at lol

Umm a Canon G9 or G10, depending on how much you want to spend is a good starter too. Those are the only 2 that I've shot with. Both allow you to start getting used to setting exposures, learning the camera, etc. Only thing you aren't going to get, is the lens options.

yeah, if you wanna spend a little money and get something you will have fun with - go with the d40. you can't go wrong.

As far as my budget goes i wasn't really planning on spending more than $400 or so, I'm only 19 and working part-time. I'll probably just look for some deals on craigslist and see what I can find.

I think Costco had the rebel with extra lenses at a killer price.
