Default How do you organize your photos?

I've been going through all my pics and I keep getting lost. How do you guys keep everything in order?

Like I have alot of just snapshot type pics of friends and family and then I have all my photography crap and inside that are events or special occasions, and then in there are of course pics of people, cars, etc. It's starting to give me a headache

thanks for any help

That would be me lol

I just bought an external at Walmart ($89 for 500gb holla!) and for right now just transferred everything over from the laptop. Everything is just folder date stamped right now but I'm sllooooowwwly in the process of trying to go through them and reorganize by who/what/when/ and mostly why.

Like you said, I've got "snap-shotish" pics that I know I'm probably never going to use any where but yet I don't want to get rid of them. I've been trying to label the folders as I go ie: Matt's senior pics, Jacob, Honeymood Island, etc but sometimes I forget. The exif has the date so if I can at least get it to a folder that I know where I took it or why I took it, I can narrow down where it's at on the hard drive.

Best advice I can give you, grab an external HD. Don't go to walmart, it's all over priced. Best 'bang for your buck' will be amazon. This is mine. I just edit what I need to edit for the time being and keep the edited photos in the same folder as the unedited photos when I first uploaded that batch of images. This way, I still have every image incase something goes wrong. When I'm done, I drag it over to the external HD and rename the folder.

For example, took pics of a grad party a few days ago. Went home, did my editing, uploaded pictures to my website, renamed the folder "Grad Party 6/11/09" and dragged it over to the external HD. It's saved there, so if the people want more edits, I just tap into the HD and edit some more...

Hope this helps!
