congrats i have a d60 for shooting around, i'd lock the iso at 100 or 200 instead of letting the auto run it up when it gets dark out. high iso on this camera is very noisy. shooting in raw over the highest jpg will give you tons of data for post processing, but if you don't plan on it play around with the settings and shoot in the high quality jpg mode.

this'll help you get started with the settings and such (d40 and d60 are very similar)

the kit lens is pretty darn good. i'd pick up a hood for it to help protect it either the HB-45 (comes with it in japan) or HR-2r rubber hood the is also used on 50mm. extra batteries and sd cards are a must

well you have your kit lens, so you need to buy a telephoto (aka my 70-300) for some of those shots that need more range, and for sneaky paparazzi type stuff. um maybe a flash (Nikon SB-600). And that should be good for a while!

Well, filters are good, and help sometimes but can also be a hassle. UV filters are basically lens protectors but can/will cause a flare because its just more glass that the light has to go through and will reflect off.

Polarizers are handy, especially here in florida with our sun, skies and water so i'd recommend them. they do get a little pricey because it is definitely better to spend the extra and get a good one.

i'll pm ya about the lens
