are you only gonna be using it for hot shoe, or for off camera, or a combo?

yeah, this one is quite a bit brighter, and used by alot of strobists, if you were gonna use it alot for on camera, and wanted to order online, then i would suggest this one: Sunpak | 383 Super Auto Flash | 0383 | B&H Photo Video

You can't beat TTL flash metering, it's pretty well accepted that Nikon has the best TTL metering. Take advantage of the fact that you can use such a good system and get the SB600 and/or SB400.

Do you have a camera capable of wireless TTL? (D70/80/200/300, Not D40/50/60) If so, get the 600. Otherwise, the 400 is very inexpensive at $110.

Yeah the sunpak stuff isnt bad. I dunno if that light would be as bright or as feature packed as an sb400 but itll get the job done for cheap.

I used to sell cameras at Best Buy, and ive used and sold about everything sunpak sells through them.

If you're worried about being bright enough, compare the guide numbers. There's a lot more to it than power, however.

i was looking at the sb600 with future planes in mind (another camera always thinking ahead) with the wireless features. and i think i want the ability to bounce the flash using the 90 degree angle and such. adorama has the 600 for about 50 bucks less than i've seen anywhere else which leans me more towards it.

i'm going to read up more on flashes and try to figure out what i really want to be able to do with one. before i buy something just to have

SB600 should be about $185. If it's less, be aware that you're probably going to get a grey market unit that Nikon won't service (ever, period).

Also, don't drop your SB600 from about three feet, as it will break. Found that out the hard way today.
