Not bad for what they are.

The only thing that helps you get better is practicing until you know all of the tools, how layers really work and then entering challenges or battles.

There are some people out there with God-like talent when it comes to photochopping so the idea isn't to be the best.... just get better by pushing your own boundaries and knowing that you will make a lot of ugly mistakes in the process (but that is what the eraser tool is for...)lol.

Join a site where they have weekly battles and you'll get better.

no such thing as a free version, unless you mean a trial, because photoshop essentials is garbage.

 

ive got free shat all the time from teachers in highschool.

 

Alright then, go back to high school and ask for Photoshop CS3.
