What was your exact setup? I take it you were using a 70-200 2.8 L IS? You can get away sometimes with a 1/30 of a second speed, but its going to be one of those lucky ones were things were just perfect and having a monopod does help a lot especially when shooting at the 200mm range. I will shoot anywhere from 1/60-1/250. Just depends on the distance they are from me, the speeds they are traveling, and the direction they are coming at me.

something like this is more or less a high shutterspeed. fast enough to get the cars sharp, but you can still see the tires are spinning and not frozen. It took me a few drift events to get panning down and the past few years i've just been working on trying a few different things to see how they come out.

btw I use a Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX. I have no IS on it though, so I do run sometimes a faster shutter speed than what you could get away with the on a canon IS lens, but ive ran some pretty low speeds at times sometimes by accident and got some pretty awesome panned shots, but it was more or less just luck

All shots in this thread were hand-held with a 70-200mm 4L (non-IS). I think I was pretty successful @ 1/60. I can sometimes get away with 1/30 if the cars are headed towards me somewhat while turning or on a bend, but it's still only about 30% successful . My goal for this trip was to work on some difficult panning - from the side @ higher speeds with maximum moition effect, thats why some of the images were @ 1/30.

I have a couple of monopods, but those things tend to just get in my way.

Out of respect for CHIN's official photographer, the short answer is no, but I had an "in".
