If I come over tomorrow to pick up that bracket you have to show me your setup for these shots cause every time I try something like this it ends up crap lol.

Basically, you have the right idea, the subject needs to be off centered, but the difficulty arises in that you really cant have just dead space off to the other side.
In this picture, you would have been better off without the dead space on the right, as the in-focus subject would have then been in the bottom left third and the rest of the picture would have been filled with non subject material.
You laugh and I'll only tell you if you promise to keep it a secret lol

Thanks, I actually thought of placing a wrench on the nut and an allen wrench on the lock nut, both hanging off to the right but then dismissed the idea. It seems that I've also been seeing a lot of negative opinions about centered subjects, so I thought I'd place the rockers to the side a little. I take it in this case centering the rockers would have been better?

Thanks for the tip, I just googled it. I think I'm gonna have to play with it some tho. Looking at the photo I posted, it seems to me that I inadvertently put the Rocker Arm (center of it) close to the bottom left intersection which sounds like it could be using the rule of thirds...?
On second thought, is the shot ignoring the rule of thirds because the subject (the whole Rocker arm) takes up (is in focus) what looks to be the whole bottom left quarter? In my search, I saw a few images where there was absolutely nothing in the entire left or right third of a photo. ....not to sound as if I'm arguing, just trying to make sure I understand correctly.
PM me if you don't mind so as to not turn this into the please teach me thread!
Thanks again

It's up to what you think looks good. The Rule of Thirds is more of a guideline. It gives you an idea of how your shot should be composed / cropped, but at the end of the day, you're the artist so it's up to you. Ansel Adams was arguably one of the best photographers in the world, and some of his subjects are bullseye'd. For example:

but yeah, i think you have the general idea. make sure the subject is around one of the intersects and that the rest of the space isn't completely empty and you'll be fine.
